Bruce brings nearly 40 years of music teaching experience, including 35 years as a band director and 17 years at Dominion Middle School in Columbus. At Dominion, he built and grew an award-winning band program before retiring at the end of last school year. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Music Education from The Ohio State University and a Master of Music in Euphonium Performance and Education from the University of Akron.
Bruce’s dedication to his students has been recognized many times. In 2017, he received the Columbus Symphony Orchestra Secondary Music Education Award; in 2024, Columbus Monthly named him Middle School Teacher of the Year; and in 2026, he received the Ray Eubanks Distinguished Service Award for his impact on jazz education and the central Ohio music community. He remains an active performer, playing with the Westerville Community Band, OSU Alumni Band, and various community ensembles. Bruce is excited to bring his experience to private instruction at MAW.
Known for his patience, integrity, and genuine care for every student, Bruce approaches teaching with the belief that music education shapes character as much as it does musicianship. Outside the classroom, he enjoys hiking with his wife, Molly, and spending time with their two adult children, Nels and Anna.

My teaching philosophy centers on creating a supportive space where students feel deeply cared for, inspired, and confident as they master new skills. I guide students in cultivating a rich tone and rock-solid technique, viewing them not as rigid obligations but as essential tools for authentic self-expression. By nurturing both artistic depth and technical freedom, I empower learners to embrace creative challenges and build a lasting, joyful connection to music.
