Alex Shinn is a versatile musician based in Central Ohio. He has a passion for all things double-bass-related, backed by a diverse performance history. Alex has performed with many symphonies, jazz groups, and rock bands across Ohio. He is able to adapt his teaching style for students from elementary to college-age and can work with anyone to help them develop an appreciation for music. Alex holds a bachelor’s in orchestral performance from Ohio University, with a minor in jazz, and a master’s in performance and pedagogy in double bass from the University of Louisville. He is an adjunct professor of double bass at Muskingum University and is a full-time luthier at The Loft Violin Shop. In his free time, Alex enjoys spending time with his wife and young son.

Artist Statement

I want to encourage students to discover their passion for music. Music is not just notes on a page, and finding its deeper meaning makes it speak to us so much more. I promote being a well-rounded musician to students with theory, aural skills, and music history as tools that follow them long after lessons end. If I’ve done my job well, a student will eventually not need a teacher and can find future generations’ love for music.
