Caleb Hutslar, a native of Worthington, Ohio, began studying piano at age 7, inspired by his musician parents and their extensive record collection. By age 12, he was an accomplished pianist and also taught himself the French horn to participate in school ensembles.
He graduated from the Fort Hayes Career Center for the Performing Arts, where he received the State Board of Education Award of Distinction for musical excellence. During this time, he studied classical piano with George Haddad and jazz piano with Dave Wheeler.
In 1988, Caleb enrolled at The Ohio State University (OSU) on scholarship, earning a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance in 1993. At OSU, he studied classical piano with Sylvia Zaremba, Donald Gren, and André Laplante, and jazz piano with the renowned Hank Marr. He also performed with the OSU Jazz Lab Ensemble and pursued studies in theory, composition, ear training, arranging, music history, and counterpoint.
Throughout his career, Caleb has performed both nationally and internationally with his jazz group and as a freelance musician. He has been associated with ensembles such as Charged Particles, contributing to their dynamic jazz performances.
In addition to his performance career, Caleb serves as an Adjunct Instructor of Music at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where he teaches jazz piano.
Caleb’s diverse musical background and dedication to both classical and jazz traditions have established him as a respected performer and educator in the Ohio music community.
